James Boyda

Hello! I’m James, but you can call me Jimmy (he/him). I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor with a background in family therapy. My specialties include family conflict, mood disorders, relationships, sexuality concerns, and trauma.

I provide online services to clients in Colorado, working with adults, teens (13+), couples, and families. My practice is inclusive and welcoming to people of diverse backgrounds, including LGBTQ+ individuals.

I hold a M.A. in Counseling from Northwestern University and a Ph.D. in Critical Studies from the USC School of Cinematic Arts, where I taught for several years.

Professional Background

Before starting my private practice, I worked on the Intensive In-Home team at Aurora Mental Health & Recovery in Aurora, CO. In my role, I provided therapy to at-risk youth and their families, helping clients improve communication, manage mental health, and foster stronger, more fulfilling relationships.

I also gained additional outpatient experience with adults at Capital Area Counseling and Respark in Austin, TX, specializing in gender and sexuality concerns, grief, life changes, and trauma.

Prior to my work in mental health, I was a lecturer at the USC School of Cinematic Arts in Los Angeles, where I taught film and culture, conducted research, and directed several short documentaries.

Throughout my career, helping others achieve their potential and goals has been highly rewarding. I’m grateful to continue this work in private practice, supporting individuals and families in their journey toward well-being.

About me

I grew up in Portland, Oregon, and recently returned to establish my private practice. I love the local culture here, the Douglas firs, and, yes, even the rain—at times!

Before moving back, I lived in Colorado, where I worked in community mental health while enjoying activities like biking in Washington Park and exploring the mountains.

Outside of therapy, I enjoy going to the movies, playing tennis, swimming, and practicing yoga. I also volunteer with the Duke University Alumni Association, assisting diverse students in accessing higher education.
